Osteria Del Figo
One of my new best friends... I mean, favorite
restaurants! Exactly the same drill as its neighbor, Taqueria del Sol -- that
is, unless you're lucky enough to get a spot at the bar where you have the bartender
as your server, you line up to order at the cash register, take a uniquely-colored
pepper grinder to any available table, and the runner knows where to deliver
the food based on the color of your pepper shaker (clever idea not shared by
Taqueria). Great business model - minimal staff and the long line of patrons
create a feeling of hey-this-must-be- good-because-so-many-people-are-lined-up.
Oh, yeah, I forgot to talk about the food. We had a bruschetta appetizer for
$4 that was quite good, although the piece of bread was too large to pick up
by hand and too toasted to eat easily with a knife and fork. The spinach salad
was flying out of the kitchen - gotta try that next time. There is also a grilled
chicken salad that seemed popular. The main course on the menu is a variety
of pastas with a variety of sauces. My husband had the whole-wheat penne with
Bolognese sauce ($4+$4). I splurged ($11) and scored bigtime with the pasta
special of the day - beef ravioli with mozzarella and a spring vegetable ragout
(homemade tomato sauce with chopped squash, onions, etc) - very satisfying,
yet very light. We had a $14 actually drinkable bottle of Tuscan (Montepulciano)
red wine. We will most definitely be back. Next time I'll try the tomato sauce
with spicy chicken and green pepper unless the special lures me away. I adore
restaurants with great food, inexpensive prices, and a funky ambiance. 1210
Howell Mill Road, (404) 351-3700.
